Tecomatic sets the standard with climate-friendly concrete

Table of contents

At Tecomatic, sustainability is at the heart of our business, which is why we are now making climate-friendly concrete the company’s new standard. In 2023, more than 90% of the concrete used in our projects was climate-friendly concrete. This is an important step in our strategy to contribute to a more sustainable industry and reduce our carbon footprint, while continuing to deliver high-quality erosion control solutions.

What is climate-friendly concrete?

Climate-friendly concrete is an innovative type of concrete designed to have a significantly lower carbon footprint, often between 30-50%, compared to traditional concrete. Traditional concrete production is a carbon-intensive process, but by using climate-friendly alternatives we can drastically reduce emissions. It involves replacing parts of the cement – the main source of CO2 emissions in concrete – with alternative binders that have a lower carbon footprint. In addition, production processes are being optimized to be more energy and resource efficient.

By using climate-friendly concrete, we reduce CO2 emissions while maintaining the strong and durable properties of concrete, which is crucial for our erosion protection systems to withstand harsh environmental conditions.

Cooperation with leading actors

In 2023, we have been working closely with leading actors in climate-friendly concrete. These companies are at the forefront of sustainable building materials and their products have helped us to implement our projects with reduced environmental impact. Skanska’s ‘Climate Enhanced Concrete’ is an example of a product we have used to create more sustainable erosion protection without compromising on quality. Skanska’s climate-enhanced concrete produces up to 50% less CO2 emissions compared to industry standards.

In 2024, we have also started collaborations with Swerock and Cemvision. Swerock’s ECO concrete meets the requirements of the Nordic Ecolabel and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional concrete.

We have also test-cast our erosion mattresses with climate-adapted concrete from Cemvision with very good results. Their concrete reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95%, which is groundbreaking.

Climate-smart future

At Tecomatic, we see a clear future where sustainable and climate-friendly solutions become the norm, not the exception. With concrete being one of the world’s most used building materials, it is crucial that we as an industry lead the way in reducing climate impact. We are convinced that our investment in climate-friendly concrete is an important part of this transition and we continue to work to ensure that all our future projects are as sustainable as possible.

In the coming years, we aim to further increase the share of climate-friendly concrete and continue to drive innovation in erosion protection.

The future of erosion protection

By protecting road culverts, quays, ports, bridges and other important parts of Sweden’s infrastructure with climate-friendly solutions, we significantly reduce the climate footprint compared to traditional methods that require quarrying and heavy transportation.

With innovative solutions, Tecomatic is contributing to a more sustainable future – a future where environmentally friendly choices protect both our society and our nature.
